COURAGEOUS UNSUNG WARRIORS
REMEMBERING LEWIS

Who we are

A COMPASSIONATE ORGANIZATION
FOR SICK CHILDREN & THEIR FAMILIES

As a mother and a caregiver, Wilhelmena Priest, owner, knows the financial burden cancer treatments place on families. CUW was created to raise funds for these families in her local community and to reduce the financial hardships that cancer can create. CUW is committed to meeting the basic needs of cancer patients and to empower them to take charge of their cancer journey and improve their quality of life.

Wilhelmena understands firsthand the pain and difficulty of caring for a sick child. Her son, Lewis, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14 in 2010. Needless to say, their lives were never the same. She spent many sleepless nights in hospitals, where she had the opportunity to meet other families dealing with similar struggles. It was during these conversations that she learned that not all families have access to the same resources; children with the same illness could receive different treatment based on

insurance and financial issues. Wilhelmena knew that she had to do something to make a change.

In 2016, after six long years of battling cancer, Lewis departed this life here on earth, but his memory and his impact still lives on in the work that we do every day with CUW. Our organization’s phone number was Lewis’ personal cell phone number. It brings us solace to know that families in need will call for help on the very same number we used to call to speak with Lewis.

Our Mission

To support and encourage families, parents, and siblings caring for children with life-threatening diseases. We offer financial, moral, and spiritual resources to help families get through this together.

Provide support to all cancer patients, regardless of race, gender, age, ethnicity, national origin, religion, and socioeconomic status to all states in the United States of America. CUW helps patients undergoing treatment that cannot work and needs help with basic living expenses such as rent, mortgage, utility bills, food, car payment, and transportation to and from treatment. CUW will also support expenses needed to support families with other children at home, such as school supplies, preparation for college, higher education or job search or placement.

CUW gives HOPE, which we call FAITH.

Biography

Mrs. Wilhelmena Priest is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of C.U.W. Remembering Lewis. She is the mother of the honoree, Lewis Xavier Priest. Co-founders are Wilhelmena’s husband, Lewis Vance Priest and daughter, Jasmine E. Smith. They are working hard to ensure that families caring for sick children do not have to worry about financial lack.

In keeping with her brother’s memory, Jasmine decided to become a pediatrician. She completed a three-year residency at Diamon Children’s Medical Center in Tucson, AZ and a three-year fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. She is currently employed with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and in a position to help find a cure for children’s cancers.

Lewis was diagnosed in 2010 with osteosarcoma at the early age of fourteen. He underwent grueling chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy treatments, and countless surgeries. Most of the treatment process was an uphill battle, from receiving negative reports to dealing with degrading and sometimes unmanageable side effects. The most amazing part of the whole daunting experience was caring for Lewis and watching how he handled all of the trauma. Lewis was the patient but was always the shining star with a smiling face and positive attitude. He was truly the anchor that kept the family together. Lewis’ spirit was never shaken. He may have been startled at times, but he never allowed his mother or other members of the family to see his weak side. He always reassured his family that everything would be all right because it is in God’s hands. Lewis received his angel wings and checked into Heaven on December 11, 2016. Lewis received his healing in Heaven instead of here on Earth despite how badly we would have preferred the latter. The family accepted this blessing and now want to support other families still going through this nightmare.

Our motto: “Financial concerns should never be a family’s concern when caring for a sick child and it should not define the quality of care the child receives.”
